Capitalism: A Journal of History and Economics offers a trans-disciplinary forum for the examination of the history of economic phenomena broadly conceived. It features original and peer-reviewed contributions by authors from across the humanities and social sciences on the historical dimensions of markets, capitalism, political economy, and economic thought. It is also interested in how economic questions interact with those of power, knowledge, race, class, and gender, as well as the interplay between the environment and the economy, in any region of the world. The journal aims to publish canon-questioning research that challenges and denaturalizes existing categories and modes of analysis. To those ends, we welcome any methodological or theoretical approach so long as there is a historical dimension to the analysis.

In this chapter we first place the emergence and growth of labour platforms within the broader development of global capitalism and then discuss four distinctive dimensions of labour platforms: i) the way labour platforms shape the relationships between the global North and the global South; ii) the way labour platforms organise and control the labour process; iii) the construction of the subjectivities of platform workers; and iv) worker resistance and worker organisation in labour platforms. We find that labour platforms are at the frontier of capitalist development, comprising both important continuities and meaningful novelties. They also generate new dependencies and a new international division of labour between the global North and South. Labour platforms present a mix of different historical forms of control of labour, to which they add control through algorithmic management. Furthermore, they are built on and foster the ideal of the entrepreneurial self and are riddled with tensions between dependency and autonomy, the shape of which influences the extent and ways in which workers organise.
Ah, capitalism - the overriding principle that if you have enough money, you can buy anything. At least that's the view some people apparently hold, who would happily abolish capitalism in an instant. But in actual fact, capitalism is a double-edged sword. We have unfortunately reached the point where money is valued over people and that's a bad thing. But if it wasn't for capitalism, we wouldn't even have half of the technological and medical developments we have today. Plus there are the luxuries - sure, Brand X chocolate may be made from the blood of the workers, but it tastes so good. And what would I do without my Collector's Edition DVD of John Carpenter's The Thing? It just doesn't bear thinking about.
