One should not dismiss the bravery Dylan displayed by shrugging off the reaction (as he read it) at Newport and ploughing on with his first fully electric album. He did have a large emotional comfort zone created by all the cover merchants and copyists. Newport, however, had suggested strongly to him that there was a possibility he would haemorrhage his existing fan base by changing direction, and, though Like A Rolling Stone proceeded slowly but steadily up to an autumn Cash Box peak of number 1 and Billboard peak of number 2 in his home country, there was no reason to presume his difficult songs would consistently generate the devotion that sustained the careers of chart regulars.
